Laser racing August 18 and 19, 2012.   Strong winds both days with gusts to 20.

Rob Krentel    1-2-1-1-1+1-2-2-2-2-2            17

Jerry Beck       2-1-2-2-3+2-3-1-4-3-3            26

Marc Solal       5-4-5-3-nf+4-4-4-3-5-4           45

David Chapin                  ns+ns-1-3-1-1-1        50

Sam Chapin    3-3-3-4-ns+3-6-5-nf-4-5           51

Vince Renzoni 4-5-4-6-nf+5-5-6-6-6-6           61

Chris Nagy      ns-ns-ns-5-2+ns                         76

Dean Grimes            ns+ns-ns-ns-5-7-7           78

Dean Grimes came late on Sunday. He hasn’t been sailing a Laser for a long time and this was a tough day to get started again.  He had a 5th in his first race and then the boat started to fill with water because the stern plug was missing.  He didn’t figure that out till he got back to shore and it took about everybody to pull the boat out so it would drain.

Chris Nagy was late arriving on Saturday and sailed a radial. When I corrected the times, he didn’t pick up any boats, but sailed the radial into second place in the last race Saturday.

Vince Renzoni continues to hang in there with the higher winds and he is getting better and better.

Sam Chapin would like the wind to drop off a little.  This is exciting sailing for most of us and a little scary for him.  In the fourth race on Sunday he hit the weather mark, but there were boats all around him.  The wind had picked up and there was no way he could sail clear of the other boats and then do a 360.  Easier to drop out.

David Chapin came out on Sunday. He won all the races he sailed except 3rd race when the sheet slipped out of his hand and he death rolled after rounding the windward mark.

Marc Solal’s day.  Wind up holding the boat flat. Better starts. He is getting better and better.  He got spray in his face that put sun screen into his eyes so he couldn’t see, that was his drop out in the last race on Saturday.

Jerry beck was really sailing flat and fast. He won a race on both days and seemed always to be up there with Rob.

Rob Krentel is our winner when David C. and Alejandro don’t show up.  He set up our course both days with the two short reaches that added more excitement to the day. Thank you, Rob.

Laser results for August 4 and 5, 2012.   Nine sailing on Saturday.  Sunday Rob had family business and Sam set up the course with a mistakenly shorter windward leg--- so with the wind up we got in nine races in the 2 hours – that is our record – the Laser sprints.

Patrick Daniel       2-4-4-4-6-3+5-1-1-1-2-1-2-4-1      41

Sam Chapin          8-3-2-3-2-6+4-2-3-3-4-3-3-1-2       48

Jerry Beck             6-5-5-6-5-9+1-3-2-4-1-2-3-1-ns      58

Marc Solal            ns-7-6-9-7-5+3-ns-4-2-3-4-4-5-3     77

Vince Renzoni     5-6-8-8-9-7+2-4-5-5-5-5-5-3-ns        83

Rob Krentel         1-1-1-2-3-1+ns                                      99

Alejandro Illera   4-2-3-1-1-2+ns                                     103

Tom Pizzi              3-8-7-5-4-8+ns                                      125

Glenda Libby        7-9-9-7-7-4+ns                                      139

On Sunday Patrick Daniel brought a lady friend, Karen, and sent her out on his Laser.  I don’t know when the traveler broke, but she sailed around below the course for almost the whole two hours.  Check you lines that go around fairleads—traveler, rudder down haul, out haul and when they start to wear, replace them.  Check the rubber connection between the tiller extension and the tiller.   When it has a crack, then change it.

Glenda tried her injured knee out.  Sailed the course behind everyone ---maybe couldn’t stand it any longer by the sixth race.   Welcome back Glenda.

Tom Pizza finial got a fairly good sail on Saturday and had some good races, but has to work on Sunday.

Alejandro hadn’t sailed for a while with all his trips around the world.  It took him three races to get rolling again.  Come as often as you can, Alejandro.

Rob Krentel had some family business on Sunday and that gave some others a chance to win a few races.

Vince Renzoni is one of our regulars and with the wind up he got in a couple of really good races on Sunday.  Practice pays off.

Marc Solal is back from France.  With the wind up on Sunday he picked up his game.  We are so glad to see him.

Jerry Beck is usually pushing up to the top, but wasn’t doing it on Saturday.  On Sunday he got his game up and pushing to the top in our sprints.

Sam hung in there on Sunday and was finally able to win a race.  He will hopefully always make that weather leg longer so we get more separation when the boats come around the windward mark.

Patrick Daniel got a new sail.  That really helps.  How clever of you to give the broken traveler to Karen.  Great racing on Sunday.  Good starts in the sprints.

 Laser Races July 21 and 22, 201

We were lucky.  It was to be a light wind weekend, but we had great wind on Saturday and not bad on Sunday.

Sam Chapin       ns-1-1-1-1-1-2+2-3-2-3-2       19

Jerry Beck           1-3-2-2-3-2-1+3-4-5-1-3         30

Vince Renzoni    2-2-3-3-4-5-4+5-5-4-6-5         48

David Chapin                           Ns+1-2-1-2-1        49

Tom Smith         3-4-5-4-2-4-5+ns                        57

Charlie Jensen                         ns+4-1-3-4-4         58

Logan Steuben                    ns-6 +ns-6-6-5-6       64

Chris Nagy        ns-ns-4-5-5-3-3+ns                       68

Chris Nagy sailed a radial and was a little late and missed the first two races.
We took times and after correcting he didn’t pick up anybody, but in that last race he had me at the leeward mark because he was just behind me but on corrected time I was just 6 hundredths of a minute ahead of him.   Craig Yates has suggested that we have the 4.7 start at 2 minutes and the radial at one minute.   I think we can let them make the choice.  Getting out ahead will solve some of the problems of sailing through the full rigs.  Notice that without time correction Chris beat full rigs.

Logan Steuben hasn’t sailed a Laser in 20 years.  Welcome back Logan.

Charlie Jensen joined us again on Sunday and did you notice that he won a race.

Tom Smith has sailed two Saturdays with us and managed one second.  Good going Tom.  Tom’s last name is not Smith --- more like Pizza – I will let you know later.

David Chapin got back on Sunday from his trips around Florida and will be off again next weekend. We are always happy to see him—a lot of talk on the course and advice.  Dose everyone know what “bow down” means?  And then it helps Sam know “OK we must have changed to A course”.

Vince Renzoni was doing well on Saturday.  A lot of seconds and thirds.  On Sunday with a little lighter wind, the finishes dropped a little. Maybe more bow down and long tack first.  But HEY, you were third for the weekend and hopefully we will have your name in the newspaper.

Jerry Beck was able to join us on both days and managed wins on both days. He is one of our leaders.

Sam had a good day on Saturday.  A wind he really liked.  On Sunday he had some close fishes and was just lucky to do that well.   Also it helps to be able to get out and sail between race weekends.  If you want to come out and sail in company give me a call.  I live close by and like sailing.

Richard Kinnie came out and sailed his MC with us on Saturday.   There is no reason others can’t come and join us.  We can give you a start a minute before the Lasers so you will have practice of
start, working upwind, mark rounding, and finish.  If you bring two boats it will be a match race, but no pre start attacks.

Then the marks are out there in the afternoon, so if you want a little short course it is there.

Lake Eustis Sailing Club Laser races July 7 and 8, 2012

Wind very light and spotty both days, worse on Saturday, but four races each day.

Rob Krentel     2-2-2-3+1-3-2-1         16

Sam Chapin     3-3-3-4+2-1-1-2          20

Jerry Beck        5-5-4-2+3-2-3-3          27

Vince Renzoni 4-4-5-6+4-4-4-4          35

David Chapin   1-1-1-1+ns                   36

Tom Smith        6-7-6-5+ns                   56

Jon Chapin        7-6-7-7+ns                    59

Jon Chapin had a tough day.  He has been doing better generally, but this heeling to leeward and sitting forward really hard for him with all the strange light wind.  The tough stuff to learn—really light wind and really heavy.

Tom Smith sailed with us for the first time.  He will sail with us again Saturday in two weeks and we will find him a better sail.

David Chapin shows us how to do it.  Weight forward and down to leeward. Sheet out as necessary to keep the boat moving.  Speed is King.  It is a race.

Vince Renzoni is doing better.  Lead Jerry in the first two races Saturday and always closer in the others.

Jerry Beck was able to join us on both days and was able to get one second place on both days.   The second on Sunday was just a foot ahead of Rob.  Jerry is another that does a little better when the wind is up a little.

Sam was a point ahead on the Sunday sailing, probably due to Rob staying back and giving instruction to Vince on which way to go.  Sam tried to link the patches of dark water to get up to the windward mark and then got a couple of breaks on the last wind shifts.  He also was careful to clear up the twists in his sheet between races, one of the things that gave him a lot of trouble on Saturday.

Rob Krentel continues to lead the overall group.  Mostly better starts, tacks and sailing fast.  I will be out looking for Alejandro so we can keep Rob entertained.

Thanks to Race Committee, Joan Bryant, Sally Renzoni and Nancy Petty.

Racing again in two weeks.

Sunday June 24, 2012

We really had a great day sailing in the rain and wind on Sunday June 24, 2012.  We had the races for Saturday canceled so we could pitch in with Sailstice.

Rob Krentel       1-1-1-2-1-2         8

Jerry Beck          ns-3-4-1-2-1       18

Sam Chapin        2-2-3-3-3-nf        20

Marc Solal           3-4-2-4-4-3         20

Vince Renzoni     4-5-5-5-5-nf       31

Michael Gapuz   ns-6-6-ns-ns-ns  40

Michael was our only Youth and he came late, but Jerry helped him get his boat in.  He sailed a radial and we took times on his two races.  On correction his times moved up, but not enough to catch Vince so he stays with two 6’s.  He came in to meet with Monte Stamper and Ray Laguna to talk about his Eagle Scout project and the landscaping around the club house.  The youth are moving up on the water and on shore.

Vince Renzoni sailed a full rig and was doing better.   Sailing flatter going up wind and in better control.  He is a light weight so this is more of a challenge for him – I remind him that he and Alejandro weigh about the same.   He was happy with his racing on Sunday.

Marc Solal wasn’t going to come Sunday unless we were racing.  It was a great day with he and Sam tied for third.  Marc had one second and several other close finishes.  Notice that Jerry, Sam and Marc were only 2 points apart at the end of the day.

Sam had his only practice sail on because of the rain and too lazy thinking about drying his good sail before taking it home.  He developed a big rip in the sail in the last race, so he comes in while he could still sail with it.  It was not downwind back to the sailing club.

Jerry took a couple of races to figure out the day, and then was right with Rob in the last three.  Won two races.  Way to go Jerry.

Rob Krentel, thank you for letting Jerry win a couple of races. We need to have him coming back.

Next Laser races in two weeks and then every two weeks all summer.

We may also have some organized sailing during the week.  If you are interested, let me know which days and we will try to get a group together. We have some extra boats so you don’t need your own Laser.

June 9 and 10, 2012

Laser races June 9 and 10, 2012    Variety of winds on Saturday and steadier and hiking wind on Sunday.  Six boats racing on Saturday and three on  Sunday.

Sam Chapin     6-3-2-3-4+1-1-1-1-1-1-1      25

Marc Solal       3-4-6-6-3+2-2-2-2-2-2-2       36

Vince Renzoni 5-5-4-4-6+3-3-3-3-3-3-3       45

Dave Chapin    1-1-1-1-1+ns                            54

Rob Krentel      2-2-3-2-2+ns                            60

Jon Chapin       4-6-5-5-5+ns                             74

Jon Chapin had an afternoon sailing with his Father and now he is in the mix.  The bottom three on Saturday really had a good work out.

Rob had to do some family things on Sunday, so his missed out on the first or second place for the weekend.

Dave Chapin didn’t come back on Sunday.  Probably couldn’t get young America up in time.

Vince is better and better.  Had a good time on Saturday trading places with the others and
Sunday sailed all the races.  When the wind is up boat handling get more critical.  Lots of practice..

Marc Solal had his wind on Sunday and sailed well.  Needs to handle wins shifts just a little better.

Sam was lucky that it didn’t blow any harder than it did or he would have been out of the whole mess.

All and all a good weekend.  We will be looking forward to nine or ten boats at the races this summer.

Thanks to Joan Bryant and Sally Renzoni for RC work and Jim Lingeman for getting the RC boat steering fixed.

May 26 and 27, 2012

May 26 and 27, 2012  The Laser Memorial Day series.

When the old man finally added up all the points we had different result than he reported on Sunday.

We had a three way tie for first and the nod goes to Randy Rea because he had the most firsts.  He didn’t sail both days, so we will still leave the first place to Patrick Daniel and the second to Marc Solal because they braved all the strange winds of the weekend.  Strange circling winds of Saturday and early bits of Tropical Storm Beryl on Sunday.

Randy Rea        1-1-1-1-1-1+ns                30

Patrick Daniel  5-5-5-4-4-2+1-2-1-1       30

Marc Solal       2-4-4-5-5-3+2-1-2-2         30

Sam Chapin     3-2-2-2-2-4+ns                  39

Vince Renzoni  4-3-3-3-3-5+ns                  45

This weekend is a separate series.  The April and May series finished the week before.  The summer series begins in two weeks.

Vince Renzoni is sailing faster, trading places with Marc and ahead of Patrick most of the time on Saturday.

Sam let Randy beat him too often--- but what is new.  Vince and Sam both went out on Sunday with 4.7 rigs, but got back in before they got in trouble.

Marc Solal is sailing better.  He did well both in the light wind on Saturday and then sailing the full rig on Sunday when the wind was really up and we had some waves.  .  He deserved the weekend win.

Patrick Daniel has been busy sailing his new 640 and we are glad to see him take a weekend off and come to sail with us.  He was a little rusty and usually sails better than his Saturday efforts.  With the wind up on Sunday he sailed a radial and showed that when we have the wind it can keep up with the full rigs.

We had six that were planning to sail Monday, but winds from Beryl cancelled that.
